The department started functioning from April 1991. Generally, the number of patients seen per day varies from 16 to 30, average being 25 patients.


Whenever new patients are seen, detailed history, physical examination is recorded. Necessary investigations are done, and then the patients are advised as to the course of treatment. The advice consists of diet, foot care, exercise, practical training of insulin injection and adjustment of the dosage etc.


The repeat patients are seen once in four to twelve weeks depending on the severity and necessary investigations are done and advice given.


As on date more than 70,000 patients have been seen in this department. The admission is done generally when the patients have very severe diabetes with acute or chronic complications or for confinement of pregnant diabetics.

On an average, there are fifteen inpatients under our care for diabetes and its complications as inpatients.

In addition to personal discussion with the patients, Junior Residents and Dietitians take part in-group discussions with the patients and their families.

For the purpose of the above, the department has charts, photographs and models of the food items and various foodstuffs. The department has also published two books in Kannada and English.

What is a Diabetes diet?

The department is active in reviewing various aspects of diabetes and presenting the same in local and national conferences periodically.

The department is headed by:
Dr.C.Munichoodappa, MBBS, FRCPC, DABIM, FAIID

And assisted by resident doctors and a team of deititian headed by
Ms.A.Arathi, M.Sc, Dietitian & Nutritionist

The department is backed-up by a well-equipped Central Laboratory, the other speciality departments and the library. A comprehensive DIABETIC PROFILE has been evolved to screen Diabetic patients which includes a range of all essential Biochemistry and Heamatology tests, cardiac tests, namely ECG, Stress test 2D Echo, Radiology tests, namely Chest X-ray, Ultrasound screening of abdomen and pelvis, EYE Examination for vision and glaucoma and retinopathy and Dental checkup all packaged at a reasonable price.
